Magnitude 6 Earthquake Highlights the Importance of a Seismic Cabinet in Data Centers

August 25, 2014

Z4-Series SeismicFrame Cabinet - Z4-11U-113C-C12P_RIGHT_RGB72.jpgThe San Francisco Bay area was hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake recently, the strongest in 25 years. Media reports described fires being sparked, damaged buildings, power loss, and more.

Mission critical facilities, particularly hospitals, can’t stop operating during such events. That’s why data centers and telecommunication rooms must have proper infrastructure to protect all networking equipment during an earthquake of such significant magnitude.

Chatsworth Products (CPI) offers a variety of products to help protect critical equipment from damage during seismic events.

The new Z4-Series SeismicFrame® Cabinet, for example, delivers one of the market’s highest load rating for seismic frames (1,500 lb), an increased range of cabinet sizes to support deeper equipment and more unobstructed interior space along the sides for thermal and cable management accessories.

In addition, the Z4-Series SeismicFrame Cabinet  meets Telcordia Technologies GR-63-CORE Zone 4 requirements. Physical shaker table tests during which a loaded cabinet was placed through simulated earthquake conditions were performed. The SeismicFrame endured the test without permanent structural or mechanical damage.

Benefits include:

  • Reduces risk of equipment damage due to seismic events
  • Minimizes excessive motion that may cause undue strain on cable connections
  • Increases chance of continued operations after seismic event
  • Helps installations meet seismic codes
